        In case of illness, avoiding school or nursery until clinical cure.

• Parotitis: mouth care, analgesics and antipyretics;
• Orchitis: bed rest, wearing a jockstrap, anti-inflammatory drugs on prescription;
• Pancreatitis: analgesics, antiemetics. Hospitalization is sometimes necessary;
• Meningitis: rest, analgesics and / or anti-inflammatory drugs.

        The possibility of complications exists and routine immunization is warranted in all children from the age of 1 year. This vaccine is well tolerated and protective after a single injection. It is associated with the vaccine against measles and rubella (MMR). Because of the risk of testicular damage, the boys will be re-vaccinated at the age of 11 years.

        It is a contagious disease caused by a virus. It is rare since routine vaccination was adopted in Canada in the late 1960s. The infection causes swelling of one or both parotid glands near the ears. Cheeks swollen, and pain is often important when children chew or swallow food. In most cases, the disease heals itself and requires no intervention. Rarely, there may be some complications: sometimes the infection spreads to the pancreas (pancreatitis), brain (encephalitis), meninges (meningitis) or sex glands (mainly boys). Having once contracted mumps or after being vaccinated against the disease, it is normally immune to life. People with ages 5 to 14 years are particularly affected, but children under 12 months are rare.

• Mode of transmission: through droplets of saliva from an infected person.
• Incubation period: usually 16 to 18 days.
• Disease duration: 10 to 12 days.
• Contagious period: up to 6 days before symptom onset and 6 days after their disappearance.
• Quarantine: see the doctor about when your child can return to school.
• Vaccine: the routine immunization schedule provides immunization against mumps.
