Mumps symptomsYour child:
Consult your doctor if you suspect your child has mumps in order to confirm the diagnosis.
In about one third of cases, the patient has no symptoms, the disease is said to be asymptomatic. The incubation period (between infection and first symptoms) is about 3 weeks. There is a painful swelling of the cheek repressing the earlobe up and away: the face is pear-shaped distorted. A mild fever and ear pain are frequently present. The locations in other glands may occur before, during or after the attainment of saliva. Orchitis (testicular inflammation) is observed after puberty. It should be suspected in a high fever and abdominal pain. The most often on one side, it reaches both testes in one quarter of cases. Pancreatitis (abdominal pain and vomiting) is possible. The neurological locations occur most often in the form of meningitis (without clinical signs in most cases), more rarely, encephalitis. There is a possibility (rare) of cranial nerve damage with permanent deafness. Mumps clinical symptomsThere is often an epidemic context. The disease began visibly by a mild fever, pain in the parotid region, a bad ear, body aches and malaise. The next day, there is a swelling in the painful ear, the angle of the mandible. This is a parotitis: ie inflammation of the salivary gland: the parotid gland. The disease usually wins the other side, giving the appearance of facial jowls. This is painful bilateral parotitis, aggravated by movements of diction, chewing and swallowing up to the third day and then declined gradually. Examination of the oral cavity showed redness of the channel Steno of the mouth (channel by which the parotid gland secretes saliva, inside the cheeks). In the absence of complications, healing occurs in 2 weeks. One in three people does not feel any symptoms. The others complain primarily of headache, general weakness, fatigue and loss of appetite. Then, the parotid glands begin to swell and ache, making chewing and swallowing painful. The body temperature may reach 39.5 to 40 ° C (103 to 104 ° F). Inflammation and sensitivity can be extended to the jaw and neck. The fever lasts two or three days and swollen glands for about a week. |
