Mumps in adults symptoms

- After an incubation period of 21 days, the first symptoms appear.

- Pain in the ears and during chewing.
- Swelling in each ear and in the back of the jaws.
- Difficulty in opening the mouth and in eating.

Treatment for mumps
- Bed rest
- Treat fever, headache and muscle aches using paracetamol.
- Do not give aspirin.
- Only vaccination can prevent the disease
Except in cases of complications, mumps require no medical care.
Mumps care and tips
- Encourage quiet activities and rest.
- Give plenty of fluids to your child: water, juice, soup. Avoid too acidic juices (orange, lemonade, grape), which increase the pain of salivary glands.
- Give your child soft foods (purees, yogurt, ice cream, etc..) in small quantities, 5 or 6 times a day.
- To relieve pain and fever, give him acetaminophen or ibuprofen in accordance with the indications and respecting the recommended doses according to age. Do not give ibuprofen to a little under 6 months, and never give acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) to a child or adolescent.
- Watch for signs of complications: fever that reached 40 ° C (104 ° F), stiff neck, seizures, dizziness, bad headache, abdominal pain, swelling or tenderness of one or both testicles.
How to prevent mumps
The routine immunization schedule provides for the administration of 2 doses of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella): a first injection takes place at 12 months and a second is given at 18 months.
