Mumps fever and mumps complications

        Complications are rare but can be important.

Orchitis

• Orchitis is an inflammation of the testicles which can cause infertility.
• Orchitis requires rest for one or two days in bed.
• It is necessary to maintain the testes using a strip of adhesive backing, because the dangling aggravates inflammation.

Other events

• Ovaritis is an inflammation of the ovaries can cause infertility.
• Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
• Meningitis and encephalitis.
• Involvement of the auditory nerve can cause temporary or permanent deafness.

Mumps treatment

        There is no treatment against mumps. The patient should rest in bed. To relieve pain, cold compresses, or ice may be applied locally on the painful area in addition to taking paracetamol. The child should drink regularly but he must avoid acid liquids wich irritate the salivary glands (avoid fruit juices!). Gargle with warm, salt water is also recommended. The child may return to school or community, the complete cure of the disease is approximately 9 days after onset of symptoms.
