Mumps in children

        Note that in nearly one third of cases, the patient has no symptoms, the disease is said to be asymptomatic. Violations of other glands are fickle, it can occur before, during or after reaching parotid. Orchitis (testicular inflammation) is the most common violation. It occurs after puberty. It should be suspected in pain in the awards. This orchitis may be unilateral, rarely bilateral. The main risk of testicular damage is permanent sterility. Achieving the ovaries is less often described. The abdominal pain is low. The risk of infertility also exists. Pancreatitis: vomiting, diarrhea, acute abdominal pain should make mention. It is normally self-limiting, but requires special medical supervision. The neurological (brain) locations occur most often in the form of a violation of its envelope: the meninges. It's about mumps meningitis. This meningitis is serious but not systematic in general. Exceptionally encephalitis is possible (reaching the brain itself). Then there is risk of mental retardation, cranial nerve damage (permanent deafness).

Mumps in children symptoms

        24 hours after these initial events which conclude the incubation period, the magnification of a one (known as unilateral swelling) or both parotid glands (bilateral swelling) confirm the diagnosis of mumps. That's when the infected person is most contagious: from 2 days before the swelling of the salivary glands until after 5 days.

Mumps in children and transmission

        Transmission of mumps occurs through saliva. The virus becomes lodged mainly in the parotid glands. The mumps virus can lodge itself in the pancreas, testicles or ovaries and in rare cases in the nervous system. The contagion is at its peak a week before the onset of signs and lasts up to one week after onset.

        There is no specific treatment for mumps. Auscultation by your doctor or pediatrician is needed to avoid complications. The doctor will diagnose and prescribe you any pain medication to lower fever and ease the pain of the child. Additional investigations may possibly be made for poor disease progression (blood, urine). If your child attends school or nursery, keep your child at home for a few days.
